Salima, Ph.D., was born in Marseille, France.
She was a student at Stanford University (where she received a
doctorate in French Literature) when she discovered Oriental
dance. This was love at first sight as it combined her interest in
dance (mainly ballet at that time) and music (classical music and
jazz). Her former teachers include Rajana Sahud, Jamila Salimpour and Aida Al-Adawi.

Salima
will continue as an occasional guest dancer
with Sultan's Delight.

Under Rajana's leadership Salima performed as a member of the Banjara troupe. For years, she danced
regularly at the Casbah in San Francisco, Cafe Maroc in Palo
Alto, and less frequently at Zorba in San Jose. She has also danced
in a
number of other clubs in the Bay Area and at numerous private
parties.

One of Salima's specialties is dancing
with a brass tray on her head. The cups and pitcher are
not attached to the tray, thus requiring exceptional balancing
skills.

Outside the Bay Area, Salima has danced in Las Vegas (as part of Jamila
Salimpour's Bal-Anat Troupe), and also in France, Hawaii, Martinique
and Greece. Now, after a hiatus of a few years devoted to teaching
and the publication of
four books, several edited journals and a number of articles, she
has joined Sultan's Delight and is
renewing her love affair with Oriental dance. | |
